20 Minutes: Transfer to Stone Town
Pick up at your hotel, head to the oldest known settlement on the island (dating to the 8th AD), Unguja Ukuu. Jozani Forest is a further 11 km (6 miles) on. Usually billed as the last remnant of indigenous forest on theisland, part of the larger Jozani-Chakwa Conservation Area, under consideration for National Park status.
4-5 Hours: Jozani Forest Tour
The guide will lead forest walk from an excellent interception centre next to car park, through a nature trail lined with eucalyptus and mahogany trees and explain the medicinal properties of various plants. In addition to the many trees, climbers and other plants, wildlife includes around 50 species of brightly coloured butterflies, over 40 species of bird, including the rare but spectacular Zanzibar Fischer's turacco, and suni. However, the undoubted stars of the show are the red colobus monkeys, which obligingly hang around in bright sunlight near the car par for the maximum photographic impact. Elephant shrew and bush babies are other animals to seen. The mangrove boardwalk takes you above the swamp, where depending on the tide, you can see tropical fish flitting between the mangrove roots and crabs scuttling across the mud. Mangroves play an important role in environmental conservation and is a valuable resource for villagers and community life. Your guide will explain the different species found in the swamp and their uses.
20 Minutes: Transfer back to Stone Town
After an amazing Jozani Forest tour, drive back to your hotel in Stone Town.
